BBC Golf Activities 2007

Several years ago, a new member of the BBC suggested having a golf day for all the 'golf mad' resident Brits  eager to be let loose on the fairways of 'La Belle France'. The first event took place rather discreetly at Biscarrosse where some half a dozen 'hackers' left dozens of balls in the woods claiming they would come back and find them another time! This was the inauspicious beginning of the BBC golf society.

Since then, the BBC has graced several clubs in the South West with its presence: Cameyrac, Gujan, Lacanau, Arcachon, Le Pian, Langon and Biscarrosse are regular venues with other further flung destinations planned for our golfers (Mont de Marsan, Cognac, Moliets and Casteljaloux).

On each occasion, we include a clubhouse lunch and extend our welcome to non-players, friends and 'groupies' who often follow the afternoon games. The lunch also provides an excellent excuse for bad  golf from our golf fanatics who complain of lack of concentration, timing, indigestion, drowsiness- anything to justify their pathetic afternoon efforts!

You might be forgiven for thinking that we only play 'social golf '.However,we aim to cater for all tastes: young or old, high or low handicaps, single players or couples, with the accent on enjoying a healthy outdoor activity, convivial company and superb countryside.

Games are usually organised to suit playing ability. Beginners are encouraged to have professional instruction and frequent visits to a driving range before venturing on to the golf course. We try to help newcomers understand the rules and etiquette so as not to spoil the pleasure of others on the course.

It was particularly encouraging to note the progress of two couples who first came to a BBC golf day 'just for the lunch'. They gradually took up golf, had plenty of practice and some lessons. They can  now more than hold their own on the links!
